Some of the tools that helped build America and the quilts that comforted the builders are on display at the Wessels Living History Farm in York March 18 - April 2, 2006. The quilts come from collectors and quilters all across the state of Nebraska, and the tools come from the extensive collection of Dale Clark, the activities director at the Farm.

  • The two shows will be open Saturday, March 18th and run through Sunday, April 2nd, 2006. Hours each day will run from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m.
  • The Wessels Farm is located just south of the Interstate 80/US Highway 81 interchange, 5520 South Lincoln Ave., York.
  • Admission is free for Wessels members, $4 for adults, $3 for seniors, $2 for students with pre-schoolers admitted free.

The main house on the Wessels Living History Farm has been filled with over 50 quilts and over 50 dolls and other items in a group show being curated by Lola Schall, the owner of York's Countryside Fabrics store. Lola solicited quilts from collectors and quilters around the region. Some of the early entries include a 68x80-inch quilt that's over 50 years old and a Lewis and Clark reproduction quilt. The latter is made from reproductions of the fabrics that were popular during the early 1800s in a design that was common at the time. Lola says that the quilts in the show can be both antique and modern.

In the barn, over 150 historic tools are on display, from the extensive collection of Dale Clark and David Wessels. Some of the highlights include:

  • An entire foot-powered carpenter shop from the 1880s period built by Barnes Manufacturing including a rip saw, shaper, lathe, jig saw and mortising machine.
  • Tools that were used to build post-and-beam barns, like the 1920 era barn on the Wessels Farm. So you can see both the tools and the barn that resulted from their use.
  • Fifty different saw sets and the patent information on each of them. Saw sets are the tools that are used to adjust the teeth of saws in or out to create the saw kerf.
  • About 20 hand-made tools from craftsmen in Nebraska like the screw plane (right) and the measuring tool (below).
  • A host of antique wrenches from the collections of both Dale Clark and David Wessels.

The tool show will also be in conjunction with a national meeting in York of the Missouri Valley Wrench Collectors.
