Delbert: "When them two boys of mine come along I was getting milk delivered to the house. The milk bill got too high. I told the milk man, 'Don't you leave any milk unless there's cash in the bottle until that bill was paid off.' And then I never charged again. That was always – if I didn't have any money I didn't buy it. That was the end of it."
Question: "Is that still true for you?"
Delbert Apetz: "Yep."
Question: "So you think – did the Depression change you?"
Delbert Apetz: "Well, to that point I would say it did."
Alvin Apetz: "I think so too."
Delbert Apetz: "To that point because when you didn't have no money. And then when you got money, you hung on to it. And if you bought something, you made sure that person or company got paid right off the bat and there was no, no money to get."

Alvin and Delbert Apetz are first generation Americans. Their father, Carl, immigrated from Germany in 1909. Alvin is the oldest. Both kids worked on their dad's farm until he lost it in the 1930s, Alvin worked in the National Youth Administration and Delbert joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. Both brothers were in the military during World War II. Alvin fought in Germany even though he still had relatives over there. Delbert was drafted towards the end of the war. After the war, Alvin worked construction and Delbert worked for the York Dairy and in construction. Delbert died in 2005.
